Here's an answer based on the items you've contributed so far (which look cool BTW though I haven't had a chance to listen- yet):

The site can't make derivatives of uploaded .m4a files. So, only the uploaded file(s) will be in the item. However, the site *can* make mp3 and ogg derivatives of 16-bit flac files. So if you create music, I recommend turning your wav files into flac and uploading those. Here is a handy tool, Trader's Little Helper:

They might be referring to derivatives or looking at streaming only items. I am not sure how you make something streaming only, or the point for that matter, but in the item edit screen you have the choice of allowing the system to create mp3's, flac, mpeg, etc. depending on the media type and file format uploaded.
